Teens get chance to be the boss

Hackney teenagers are to get the chance to start their own businesses with employment and skills specialists Working Links.

The leading welfare to work provider will run self-employment workshops, aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds, at the Forest Road Youth Club in Dalston. They start today, Friday 6 August, and occur each Monday and Friday until 20 August.

Well known organisations such as the British Library, RBS-Natwest and the Prince’s Trust will also be on hand to offer expert advice.

The goal is to give young people support and advice to get their businesses off the ground and the workshops will cover everything from marketing to tax codes.

Self-employment Service Performance Manager for Working Links, Peng Ong, said: “We are experienced in delivering self-employment workshops. We have produced a tailored programme which will help young people create detailed business plans.

“We’ll cover both practical and theory work in individual and group activities. Renowned organisations have also come on board to point our young people in the right direction.  ”

The programme is split into six modules with expert advice at each stage. This includes banking advice from RBS-Natwest, intellectual property information from the British Library, business support and funding advice from the Prince’s Trust and tax and National Insurance guidance from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

The workshops start at 10am until 2pm and booking is recommended. It’s advised that all modules are completed to get the most out of the course but people can still attend individual workshops.
