Camden parents to benefit
from new programme
Date: 28 August 2008
A pilot programme that has helped hundreds of
families living across East London has proved so successful it is
now being expanded to support parents living in Camden. And a
search is on to find parents to staff the new programme.
The Parent Champion Scheme, which is run by
Working Links, helped more than 650 families in Tower Hamlets in
its first two months. It quickly went on to help hundreds more. It
was designed initially to work in disadvantaged places to help
families improve their circumstances and those of their
children.
“By using parents to ‘champion’ the scheme,
the programme proved a real success,” explained Lee Trappitt of
Working Links. “It meant that we could reach more families. They
felt comfortable talking to people who, just like them, had had
similar experiences. We were able to help them get the support they
needed, which is why we are now expanding the service into another
area.”
The scheme puts families in touch with
organisations that can help them improve their lives. Each ‘Parent
Champion’ is given training so that they are well placed to advise
parents on how best to access services such as childcare.
“There is often confusion about what’s
available and where and how much it costs,” added Lee. “The Parent
Champion scheme helps parents find the services and support they
need.”
- With the expansion of the scheme in Camden, Working Links is
looking for people who might be interested in becoming Parent
Champion to join its existing team. Anyone interested is invited to
either contact Working Links on 0800 917 9262.
